No, you don't. "Music theory" isn't just that I-IV-V is how you make a good pop song. That's a good introduction, but the whole of music theory covers a lot more than you probably realize. If you actually learn enough about it you'll find that the songs you probably think of as sounding "good" are very simple from a theoretical perspective, and bands like this actually explore a wider array of concepts in much more depth. Saying this has "nothing to do" with theory is unequivocally ignorant.
