The point is if EVERYONE, the whole world had this philosphy, the world would be a better place, so there would be no need to attack another country or the need to form an army to defend one. John Lennon wasnt overindulgent like many rich people today. He's talking about the senseless greed of wanting to own so many posessions that you push others off.
