Starting at 5:23, this piece, in particular, represents Star Trek as whole musically for me. I still love this piece years after hearing it for the first time when I was a kid watching TNG .

That's a very nice thought. This music like this has shaped our reception of scifi-movies like no other.I have to point out though that the Star Trek fanfare that is played here under the series' most often featured composer Jerry Goldsmith, was in fact composed by Alexander Courage and was already in the first movie. (It was reused in TNG's opening)Goldsmith contributed many beautiful pieces. My tip for beginners: The opening titles of Star Trek 8.
