I think this movie was the inspiration for Three Kings with George Clooney, anyway great movie, I like Donald Sutherland in it as the hippy tank commander. 'When we go into battle we play music very loud, it kinda calms us down'

Spoils of war..Thats the correct phrase. I am sure Uncle sam wouldnt hesitate to take the Nazi gold into protective custody.

"was by rights US government property"Really - How so??The gold was the German Reichsbank gold. It may surprise some to know that some things in foreign countries are bugger all to do with the US Government. Strange but true!If you mean as the spoils of war, well America wasn't the only country in the war. Although you wouldn't know it, which is funny when you consider that they turned up later than everyone else.
