Now Gergiev and the LSO have a worthy interpretation. I can at least say it is better than his rampantly fast "tragic" symphony. I think it's better than even Solti and definitely Bernstein, I tend to feel that the latter makes the finalé a bit of a slog to listen to and doesn't force the dynamic or tempo enough. It still has enough cowbell, thankfully.

Tony Duggan pointed out that boulez interpretations are sometimes like X rays, that being the case it may help othere interpreters here the works with a kind of neutrality and here the score precisely, and that would be useful on occasions, i personally like Abbado interpretations of the later works...but I agree there are no bests.

You're right ! Simon Rattle is a amazing condutor I enjoy him too !

Don't forget about Sir Simon Rattle.

I think Boulez is usually focused on following notes, details etc. and forget to add a bit of mystery, of a madness. In his performances there is no place for sentimental gestures, maybe it's too dry for me.I've just listened the Sixth with Boulez, the finale is not a great story. Bernstein in his late period did it like a thriller :-)A few years ago I heard Walter's performance of (th. I was deeply disappointed :-(

Well, yes you have too. Walter simply is too essential to skip for any potential Mahlerites. However, I disagree with your Boulez comment, maybe you could explain what "common" means? interestingly, Walter never conducted the 7th, because he believed it to be a weak symphony, and he never wanted to showcase Mahler's weaker works.

There are so many different posibilities to perform the Seventh ... :-)Pierre Boulez is for me too "common", I mean in symph no 7 I expect something little bit mad.I have to get to know Walter :-)

There are differents interpretations of Mahler :- Leonard Bernstein (rather a bit slow)- Claudio Abbado (rather faster than LB)- Pierre Boulez (the modernest)- Bruno Walter (the "pupil" of the master)I prefer Leonard Benstein but the others must be listened for those who like Mahler.

This is most amazing Mahler's symphony I think and LB interpreted it wonderful.Only Solti caught how to conduct rondo finale.

instead, you just said Bernstein's the best Mahler conductor (impossible, there are no bests), and what you said about Boulez is that he has "a very modern interpretation"- which is a neutral statement, it could be good or bad. For people who like the "Modern" approach, Boulez might appeal to them more.warning, one more "best" out your mouth, you will be blocked! P |
