Have to figure with slow speed (135-175 tops) and no armor at least a squadron of fighters to cap them. and with luftwaffe limitations these could only be successful when there was NO fighter protection. I believe they lost 12/15 flying to Africa from Italy, even with escorts. They did fairly well on eastern front, but were eventually withdrawn do to losses etc. ust JATO bottles to assist in take off, (although stressed airframes).

Sorry for the goof in my first comment - I meant Ju52, honest ;)

German soldiers called the Me323 "the sticking-plaster bomber"; they preferred to stick with the old Ju88 whenever possible.

have you ever seen 1 get shoot down its not a sitting duck its a sitting grandma.
sharpanator (December 31, 1969 at 5:59 pm)
true, but they put engines on a "glider" cause there was no real transport plane developed for transporting tanks ans all that, it was too early in history. Other thing is that those planes are fast to build cause of the wood. In a war building speed and mass is pretty important.
waverly24 (December 31, 1969 at 5:59 pm)
True, but it was sort of asking to be shot from the skies by putting engines on a glider. They were suicidal to fly with no air support anyway.
sharpanator (December 31, 1969 at 5:59 pm)
idiot, those are transport planes like todays galaxy or hercules transporters, every transport or tanker plane is unprotected. they transport things like from europe to africa, the chance that they meet enemy fighters on that way is very little.

i guess this is the mother of galaxy |
