I've been doing karate and kiai is just what it means "to shout" nothing more. Its used to contract core muscles and possibly scare your opponent.I have two major problems with this.1.Theoretically if his voice reverberates the water thus hurting his opponent,then shouldn't his voice reverberate against his own body?2.Being able to ring a bell with just your voice,although impressive has more to do with frequency at of the bell and your voice. If the frequencies overlap the bell will ring.

In my experience with Tae Kwon Do, the only thing a Kiai really does is increase muscle tone throughout the body for a brief moment directly before imapct. The secondary purposes are scaring your enemy, and attracting attention so that help can arrive. Kiaing does shit aside from that. The only reason these people pass out is because they honestly believe in the Kiai. If he went up agianst me... nothing would happen because I don't believe that crap.

I bileve in it. I trained karate once and in karate you use kiai (shout) too. And in the karate club i was in we was not the best at doing kiais. Every time we use our kiais people who don't do karate got a huge shock!!!!
