It started with Lord Infamous. It was really all a gimmick. The original group name was the Backyard Posse. The first album was called Triple Six Mafia Smoked Out Loced Out. The name stuck after that. THey have been doing it since the late 80's and early 90's and the was so viral all over Memphis that the Memphis style became the Three Six sound.
