theres a bit of a dilema here....alcohol was forbidden in islam because it numbed the mind caused addiction...it was feared that it will estrange the individual from its religion, which is the main purpose of life...so if other substances cause the same effect....how come it is not harram(forbidden)

so its illegal to harvest the plants that produce coca leaves, but ok to import qat leaves, which simple need to be processed to make it much more potent. ??? seems like a double standard, but really who would bother with any and all of this junk.

I did have 2 Uncles: who made sure they had it daily lest they fall ill.They were truly dependent upon it. Though it was costly; Ive never knew of anyones financial ruin because of it. Besides,it is a community drug. Often they who have share with the haven'ts. ...Anti-depressant drugs today include the chemical in qat...Figure out a way the spirit of chewing qat can benefit the Yemenite economy??You will have solved Yemens problems forever..It needn't be banned..Just harnessed properly.

My experiences w/qat: I was 16 when I went to Yemen. The majority of men chewed daily. In fact the 1st community concern of the day was:"From where is our qat today" The day was dull and lazy after dinner without it. With it they gathered. The aged told stories of wisdom; adults bragged of accomplishments and travels; and the youth promised to surpass them all. Moments of silence were interrupted by rememberance of the prophet as; and the smoking omg...But no violence. ppl were still kind.
