Northern Dancer has sired more champion horses in the 20th century then any other by the widest margin! The recent problem of a lack of diversity in bloodlines has added to the weakening of horses bone density which has added to more injuries. Recent understanding that the size of a horses heart coming from the mare will hopefully aid in breeding longer distance horses who can break the now average 2:28 1 1/2. Obviously these horses do not have the heart/lung capacity of Secretariat, but who does?

Unfortunately, it will probably be a very long time before another Secretariat is born due to the shoddy breeding and quick buck mentality of everyone involved in racing today. There won't be another Secretariat because people are not breeding or training for another Secretariat. People are happy with mediocrity like Big Brown, War Emblem, and Smarty Jones. So we will continue to see these types of horses win classics and believe they are great, instead of witnessing another 2:24 in the Belmont.

Northern Dancer has indeed brought the Thoroughbred to another level. A mediocre one. Horses like Big Brown are idolized as being 'great' when their times against the true greats don't even come close. And running 12f and up is considered cruel and unusual for these little sprinters who can barely stretch out to a mile and a quarter. Past runners of the Belmont, in the last 20 years, who scored in under 2:28 have come almost exclusively from the Raise a Native line through Mr. Prospector.

Apparently Sham didn't formally "break down," but he finished last and was found to have a hairline fracture in one of his legs in July and never raced again after the Belmont. He might have put too much pressure on that leg in the Belmont and developed the fracture as he was training up to his next race.

I don't blame you its like hearing a great piece of powerful music. Its inspiring to see awe inspiring greatness like Secretariat!

That is criminal! Beyond tragic! Secretariat was a genetic masterpiece. As was Northern Dancer who has sired more champion race horses than any other horse. Breeders say Northern Dancer's bloodline has taken horses to another level. What is amazing about Northern Dancer was how small the horse was yet ran a 2:00.flat 1 1/4 mile Kentucky Derby which as you know only the great Secretariat beat. Its unfortunate he wasn't a great sire. But what a horse. I get chills watching him run!

And Secretariat was allowed, by his owners, to get so portly that he developed laminitis, and had to be put down. Criminal.

there will never be another horse like him..

It's kind of ridiculous, but I cry every time I watch this.

He didn't break down in the race. He just ran out of steam and fell back.
