Bright fluorescent light for around 12 hours per day, or placing near a bright window is fine. Avoid direct sunlight. The requirement for light only comes after you birth the cakes. Prior to that, you can keep them in normal ambient room light or darkness. It doesn't matter. However, the old adage to 'keep in total darkness' during colonization is now known to be incorrect. Light has little to no effect on colonizing mycelium.RR
