Playing along Pastorius' Barbary Coast on my fretless. Jaco's quasi ad lib playing makes it a somewhat difficult piece(sometimes too difficult).

Personally I don't believe this should be played note for note. The essence of jazz is improvisitation. Jaco played it different every time. Do you want to sound like Jaco or do you want to sound like yourself? You have the chops, now express your own voice.

Yes, I can agreee but I believe I have improved since which I hope shows in, e.g., 4 A.M. The original Barbary is initially a bit undefined as well, intonation-wise:-)

I agree. When I play this kind of music I make no attempt to recreate it note for note but pretty much improvise the whole thing but still play in much the same style to maintain the "feel" of the original. I usually can do this pretty well with Jaco since I own his "Modern Electric Bass" DVD which has taught me a lot about his technique and approach to music. |
