The account deficit is not really the issue here. Sure the Chinese breakdown may be part of the problem, but their Shanghai and Shenzen markets are very small compared to the U.S. The real issue is the fear of breakdown in the Yen carry trade. As the world's interest rates increase, and doubts about the U.S. housing market and consumer increase, taking cheap Yen and putting them in U.S. equities and treasuries seem less attractive.
