I'd say Bathory were the first Black Metal band, anyway, Emperor are a pretty unique band so I think they should have their own seperate genre. (emperial metal)

Depends on who you think invented "black metal".. was it Venom? That puts it around 1981. Mayhem's first demo was released in 1986, as was Sarcafago's "I.N.R.I" album.
