If you speak to your dog in a strong, assertive manner, indicating that YOU are top dog - hitting is not needed. Most dogs want to please their master, anyway, so be clear so your pet is not confused. Usually, confused owners create confused pups.

I realize your dog doesn't actually crap on anyone, i was making a point. I've seen lots of well and badly trained dogs, and sometimes you have to shout/hit it with a newspaper/other form of punishment. Otherwise you end up with an animal which thinks it's boss and might get offed by a pissed off neighbour...
