wow....boring ending....

The EN games never let you destroy the red stone. The best you can ever do is reject it. It comes from a place beyond time. I think that destroying the stone would be a little too "Hollywood" of an ending, which the EN games have never done. You would especially hate the PSP's Echo Night #1 ending, I'm sure, because the ending is even more obscure than this one. It fades to white in mid-sentence just as Richard realizes something strange.

In previous games, the stone gave the one who held it supreme powers (but took over their soul, making them bloodthirsty), and the ones who were killed by the stone became ghosts.Like you, Henry Osmond (Richard's father) thought that it depended on who held it, but he went insane upon touching it. If Richard takes the knife in the end of EN1, he also becomes a murderer. When he returns, he kills the policeman without saying a single world. (One of the most shocking moments in the game.)

Right. In Echo Night 2, Richard is engaged to and eventually marries a woman named Christina Collins, whose name was originally Rebecca Morgan.

And Claudia is only in this game, correct?
shiveryshiva (July 31, 2008 at 9:14 pm)
Exactly. The only constant is that the character is named Richard Osmond, and he appears to be the same age.

So the character Richard Osmond, what the stone does and how it works, and any other established rules, are different from game to game?
shiveryshiva (July 31, 2008 at 4:46 am)
There is no canon in the series, actually. Each game contradicts the others. Two games have not been released in English (the second PS1 game and the PSP prequel). I have beaten every release in this series in both Japanese and English. (I plan to start working on a fan translation patch for EN2 soon...)

The main character is always Richard Osmond, and he is always the same age (26, I think). There have been four Echo Night games. (2 for PS1, 1 for PS2, and 1 for PSP). They all take place at different times, but Richard Osmond is always the hero... It is a mystery why. There is no connection between any of the games except for the first PS game and the PSP semi-prequel. Every game (even the prequel) contradicts the other games.

Yeah...I don't understand what happened...
