I read an interview with Aronofsky talking about the original, it was to have Brad Pitt and feature large scale battle scenes and a generally bigger budget. I am REALLY glad it didn't work out, I think the more human scale of the final product works perfectly, and epic battle scenes, and especially Brad Pitt would have ruined it, or at least made it a much different movie.
