Rod Stewart's a great singer and, as this epic proved, a great songwriter. This song may have come out the year I was born (which was 1976) but lyrically and musically has held up very well and stood the test of time very nicely. I always liked the song musically but I didn't know the song was about a gay friend of Rod's who was horrifically killed by some dirtballs. People should like people regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, disabilities (in my case, I'm autistic) and so forth.
