Well I saw him last night in Salford. In fine singing and playing form. shame about the wet brain though. Still, his choice. .. His singing and playing is still, even now, 27 times better than mine will ever be.

It's incredibly weird to watch this. We lived on the same road as John and Bev in the 70s and 80s, and I knew Mhairi and Spencer (their children) as well as Bev's son Wesley, who was a very close friend.I know he's rat-arsed in this video, but take it from someone who was there at the time: he was rat-arsed back then too. And his talent still comes straight from the fucking angels.

As great and as soulful as he is, watching this video makes me want to cry-he got old, he was a drunk, he became the very thing rock music deemed he should become-his best the early seventies, when the light in his eyes uniquely became the soul of his voice, were the death of folk as a mainstream, but John, I just 'Couldn't Love You More....

John's a complicated man, badly hurt along the line. Over time he's been beautiful, wonderful, sometimes crap. Sometimes hit the nail on the head and sometimes miles wide of the mark. But the key thing is he's still putting it about and, like Dylan, if you're lucky, you get the gig of a lifetime. This song is gorgeous, and nice to see Alan on bass - first saw him with JM in 1981! When John's sober he's good to listen to- either talking or singing. Go to his gigs and keep him working,it's worth it |
