This account from a brave old soldier with whom I was privileged to be a friend; Squadron Leader Keith J. MacDonald, now late, of RNZAF 485 Squadron: The Spitfire truly came of age with the advent of the Merlin 60 Series engines equipped with a 2 stage 2 speed supercharger. Still beautifully responsive and feather light on all the controls, the Spitfire Mk IX and subsequent Merlin 60 powered types proved to be a nightmare for the Hun interceptor, whether he was airborne in the Bf109 or the Fw190

German planes: look like they will eat you alive (lean mean killin' machine)American planes: are just huge! (except P-51)British planes: are just graceful and beautiful

its not just the most beautiful aircaft ever made. but also the symbol of the freedom of the free world. without this aircraft the world may not look like it does today.
