That's correct, he cannot actually see the ball. More important than his watching the ball is the way he keeps his head still through the shot. Because he keeps is eyes focused on about a 2.5 foot circle where he knows the point of contact should take place, he is able to produce a more consistently clean point of contact than the typical club or even pro player, who will often look up directly after or even before he or she actually hits the ball. This reduces shanks and mis-hits considerably.

ahmedgardezi actually no Federer does not see the ball hit his racket, that is physically impossible. Infact like HUMANS he sees a blurr of the ball and he looks at the point of contact. He does not actually see a clear ppicture of the ball hit his racket but merely a two blurrs that come after each other, the blurr of the ball and the blurr of the racket.
