Berlusconi wants Russia in EU

European leaders meeting in Brussels have postponed talks on a new Russia-EU partnership agreement. The issue is now expected to be shelved until November 14, when a summit between Russia and Europe is held in Nice. In a surprise move, Italys Silvio Berlusconi said Russia should be in the EU.

It's nice that Berlusconi has some nice words to say on the Russia-EU relationship, but he would be much better off trying to solicit support for a trade community of European states seeking a special relationship with Russia. I think Berlusconi could find a certain amount of support for such a proposal, especially in southern Europe.
