Natural selection as in, survival of the fittest. The beneficial or favorable genes are passed on because the ones that have them are more likely to thrive in their environments and reproduce. I didn't mean it in the individual sense, but just pointing out (like you said) that it seems sloths aren't particularly fit as a species to survive the test of time, and yet they're still around. :)

natural selection is passing on of beneficial or favorable characteristics and genes. it's not something they survive...its what they do or have that allows them to survive. it is amazing though what characteristics can be seen as favorable especially when there are organisms out there that seem like they'd be at the more of an advantage than a sloth.

They shit at the base of the tree to give it nutrients so the tree they live in keeps producing leaves. They're not extinct because they move so slowly that most of the time predators don't see them.Sloths are the best animals. They're the only ones with the right idea!! Just sit around eating and sleeping all day everyday all their lives!! What a fantastic existence. In the next life I wanna be a sloth.
