The wealth generated by Singapore's much-touted economic success story has not benefited everyone, least of all its senior citizens, a.k.a. the nation builders. Filmed on the streets and back-alleys of downtown Singapore in July 2007, this video does not contain any enactments or acting. Directed, shot and edited by Martyn See

I think I would ask ... what happened to their direct family members? why had they chose to left them alone?

I see these beggars and the old folks selling whatever they could find to buy food for themselves. It pains me deeply seeing them but I know that me giving them $2, $5 or even $10 would only help them for a short while. We need changes from within, do not rely on others but instead, stand up for yourself and your fellow Singaporeans. There are people who need help and they have no voice. With the power of the masses, we can achieve great things.

Singapore feels more and more like a living hell...

I was back in Singapore early this year and I was shocked to see two beggars at Waterloo street, each no more than 50 feet away from each other. Then sitting at McDonalds at a shopping center, a penhandler passed by beggng for change from customers sitting outside the fastfood outlet... What has Singapore become? Better or worse off? |
