I'd heard George mainly wanted Preston around to keep McCartney from being so bossy. Paul would put on his "good" face when company was around. Since the group was breaking up by the time Billy entered the picture I doubt George was worried about keeping the group going.

Rock-n-Souler Billy Preston("Will It Go Round In Circles," "Nothing from Nothing," etc.) plays the cool organ and rhodes keyboards. Rumour has it that George wanted him to become the fifth Beatle, making the band as multicultural as its influences. And what about George's terrific toss-off riffing!? The solo, yes, but listen to his roadhouse rock counterpoints via Claptonesque/Beck shredding circa 1970...Because he could! Vastly underrated, George was always brilliant. And this shows why...
