Real Sabot rounds are basically rounds designed smaller in diameter than the actual bore of the weapon it is used in, creating a high speed low drag effect. Sabot rounds provide MUCH better flight performance and accuracy. They use the extra kinetic energy gained from this to penetrate heavy armor, small bunkers, etc. Examples of sabot rounds are certain HEAT rounds (High Explosive Anti-Tank) and the common shotgun shot or slug round.
