I'd hardly call this left-wing myself - Herbert shares some of the same concerns, but at the end believes the system is fundamentally just. We've only abdicated in our social responsibility in making it work properly. But what if the system itself - the one from whose ivory tower Herbert is able to make such lofty pronouncements - is to blame? In this light, Herbert's prescriptions (protests, civic involvement, etc.) can only be seen as toothless and quaint.

Calling the NYT leftist is a crok! I'm leftist and the NYT is definitely right wing plutocrats. NYT may have some liberal slant on social issues that affect the rich and powerful, but when it comes to the politics of war, money, pharmacies, power, etc. they are totally conservative.

Of course it would not garner the respect of the hate mongers. Those who listen to the real pessimism of conservitive talk shows that cater to a cynical mean spirited Americans who cant see pain beyond his or her own. Those who wrap themselves in the flag with no regard for what it stands for. The Americans that support wars because they just want to see someone DIE whether or not that person commited a crime. They wont appreciate this.

Clasic liberal bias (go figure he's from the nyt). He blames his country, and not the thugs killing the people. He wants us to just talk to them and it will be ok! It just ain't goint to happen. They want us eliminated. He calls us appathetic, but really what he means is we don't all beleive as he does therefore we are appathetic, because we just can't see the light. It's amazing what a change in generations. No wonder the nyt is in the toliet.
