Same here, i got this recently its awesome. it may be the fat sounding Gibby's humbuckers thats making it sound like that.

I would suggest a noisegate to tighten up the sound and a compressor. EQ pedals dont work well to boost the gain on a marshall i found

Yes, i got a Valvestate 8080... And it can play metal fine, want more gain buy a pedal.
