This song has haunted me....in saw dust restaurants, and one night cheap hotels. Steets that followed like an insidious doubt that overwhelms me...WHAT could I have been? WHO have I been before now? and WhY me now?Somehow, for the moment, it makes sense...and then she stops singing and my life is lonlier than before. And I want her back with me.

something about the quality of her voice is magical.

as usual, Natalie tells it like it is in her lyrics to her songs as a solo artist as well as with the ten thousand maniacs. We need her back in the spotlight. No one is addressing social issues like she has and the current crop of top 40 and radio is crap!thanks for posting this and thanks Natalie for bringing to light what needs to be addressed

Carnival, in it's low-tempo groove and grainy video, as well as the ever-present bathwater warmth in Merchant's voice, is perfect mood music for quiet times of reflection or relaxation.

There really aren't enough words to express my deep love & admiration for Natalie Merchant. Either as a solo artist or singing with one of the all-time great bands 10K Maniacs, her songs have always spoken to me very deeply on an emotional level. Thank you, Natalie, for bringing joy to my life through your incredible music!
