You must listen the all instrumental (orchestra) version by Frank Purcell!!!. beautiful!. David Mc William lyrics, is sad, shows a hopeless end for Pearly Spencer. Later on Marc Almond's ads one paragraph at the end of the song that "changes" the final fate of Pearly Spencer into hope when he mentions that those old days are gone and that the race is almost won by Pearly. All three versions are excellent but the all instrumental one is a heavenly one.

This is one of the most beautiful and unforgetable songs I have heard. It is sort of cheerful and sad at the same time. This song was famous around the world. I agree - I thought this was such a brilliant and haunting song when I first heard it in the sixties. Sadly I learned only recently that for David McWilliams, the race is run as he died of a heart attack at his home in Northern Ireland in 2002: he was in his 57th year...
