http://www.edmunds.com/advice/... days there are a lot of small cars pounding their chests and claiming they get the best gas mileage around. Well, we got tired of the talk and decided to settle the score. Right here, right now!We picked three cars from our long-term fleet known for squeezing extra miles out of every gallon of gas: the spunky 2008 Smart Fortwo with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, the thrifty 2008 Ford Focus SES coupe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its legendary 1.9-liter "TDI" diesel engine. Then we added a heavily favored gasoline-electric hybrid to the mix: a 2008 Toyota Prius.

The batteries last over 150,000 miles and the brake pads last 90,000 miles. Believe me, you save a TON of money owning the Prius over any other car. You can buy one nicely equipped with a zero deductible 100,000 mile warranty for about $530/month for 60 months. I drive over 200 miles per day and I spend about $17.00 in fuel with gas prices at $3.49 per gallon.

I own a cab company and I am phasing out all FORD vehicles and replacing them with the Toyota Prius. The Prius gets well over 48mpg in the city as well as the highway. In fact, I have personally over 55mpg city. For all of you johnmonkeys and jizzmongers out there, I suggest you actually drive the Hybrids before you go off half cocked telling people what you think you know about them. You will never find another American car in my fleet (Hybrid Escape excluded) unless they go hybrid.

If you're gonna buy a prius, then you better put that money that you're saving on gas, in the bank. . .You'll need every penny to replace the batteries. ^^

Poor Ford? The Prius costs like 25 grand, I can buy a Focus with power windows and locks for 10 grand. They have about a 30% difference in fuel economy. $15,000 buys a lot of fuel.

I purchased an '07 Focus and get 37 on the Hwy and 28 in town. Since I use it more on the hwy it works great for me. Cost of purchase was only $11,000 which is very reasonable conpared to the others in this test. Plus, it is just a plain gasser and most shops can work on it with ease, again lowering the cost of maintenance. My Focus is also one of those California Partial Zero Emission Vehicles...and it's carbon footprint is lower than these test vehicles. I couldn't be happier, buying American.
