This is an excerpt of the 30 minute speech supporting the Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater. Reagan speaks of big government, high taxation, and the "war on poverty." He addresses foreign policy issues including the risk of appeasement, "peace through strength," and the Vietnam War. The speech establishes Reagan as an important figure in the conservative wing of the Republican party. To a significant degree, Ronald Reagan's election to the presidency stems from this speech, given on national television on behalf of, and sponsored by, Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign. The speech remains amazingly fresh as a statement of modern American conservative philosophy four decades after it was delivered. Here is a link to the full transcript: http://www.reaganlibrary.com/r...

Phoenix, if you were running, you'd get my vote.Yuz, although your story is a sad one, you bailed on your country. There is every chance in the world to succeed here if the gov't stays out of the way. Congress tries to invade our lives with more regulations, more laws, more taxes and all they're doing is crushing the American dream. You and your family ran from that and that is sad. Socialism is a toilet system and has no place in the greatest country, USA.

"Freedom and democracy, which will leave Marxism-Leninism on the ash heap of history," he said in a 1983 speech. Then history gave Reagan a partner. In 1985, Reagan and the new Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev met in Geneva. Gorbachev recalls their mutual distrust. "I told my colleagues Reagan was a dinosaur, while he called me a hardline Bolshevik," says Gorbachev.

CBS NEWS DOT C OM = Ronald Reagan's greatest achievement, ending the Cold War, is most remarkable because he had waged the Cold War so aggressively. As CBS News Correspondent Wyatt Andrews reports, by Reagan's third year in office he had spent $1 trillion building up the U.S. military. Europe was in turmoil over new missiles he ordered aimed at the Soviet Union, and a tough sounding Reagan promised communism was going down.
