Superb British mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly as Cesare sings the aria,"Va tacito e nascostoquand'avido è di predal'astuto cacciator.E chi è mal far disposto, non brama che si vedal'inganno del suo cor." ---"The cunning hunter moves silently and stealthilywhen he is eager for prey. And he who is disposed to evilDoes not wish the deceitfulnessOf his heart to be seen." ...in a scene shrewdly staged as a choreographed confrontation between the scheming Egyptian King Tolomeo (French counter-tenor Christophe Dumaux) and Cesare. The aria is sung as a bold warning from Cesare to Tolomeo, who has just invited the Roman emperor-general to his palace.Recitative and aria from the multi-award-winning, famous and fabulous, funny and moving production of Handel's "Giulio Cesare in Egitto" by DavidMcVicar, set in late 19th-century colonial Egypt with the Redcoats keeping Cesare's Roman Empire running. With William Christie directing the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. From Glyndebourne, August 2005.If you like this, do go and buy the video and get the entire opera! (It's really worth it!)

I will and maybe he's the 'very occasional exception'.

A counter-tenor with finesse? Try Jaroussky. (Though he is more a sopranist - too high for Cesare) He's amazing.

If you had a copy-machine from OCE, you to would dance in the same manner as these two gentlemen. Please take it from me, OCE is older than it's competitors, and they're machines sucks

And I thought it was a man in that costume. There we se Guglo Cessare transform his rival from a "tough guy" to a scaredy-cat.BTW Andreas Scholl looks like a pacafist in the uniform of a German Military Police.

Buy the dvd, it's worth the money. With all respect to Andreas Scholl (who is at least as good a Ceaser as Connolly)the entire production of the one we are looking at is superb!

I had so much fun watching this! I'll definitely look out for the DVD -- OAE is one of my favourite orchestras right now. Thanks for uploading this!

Yes, Connolly is the definitive Cesare! I saw this production and she was as commanding from a distance as in the closups of the DVD. Scholl is good and the voice is one of the best, although his portrayal is somewhat weak, but we're all in love with Sarah! |
